Kinja'd!!!

Back in January a man in a Minivan backed into my Taurus SHO in a parking lot. I filed the insurance claim today. The doors will have to be bumped and repainted, maybe re-skinned.

My question is, how will they match the level of metal fleck in the paint at the dealer.

Anyone want to play over under on how much this is going to cost to repair? I thinking $4200. Thank god for insurance.

I will say under $2000. Why did you just now file a claim though?

Wanted it to warm up so the summer vehicles are a possibility to DD instead of getting a rental.

My $0.02:

I think they will be able to repair and match it correctly.

1.) It’s basically new, so there’s no fade in the paint/cc. They can probably still get the exact brand of paint they need regarding flake content.

2.) It’s basically new, so you should get OEM parts vs. aftermarket.

Price? I can’t tell hit depth but I’d say $3700-4000. Right where you are at.

Ok. Have you heard back from whoever is handling your claim? If they are like us, they will ask if you called the police and why you just now filed it.

Sorry, I am a claims adjuster. We would have to investigate it to determine if it occurred when you said and all that fun stuff. I do wish ya the best though.

Depth isnt far at all, but the fact that i got hit on the seam of both doors is what concerns me.

Filed with the police that day. There is a police report. Actually the guy that hit me is the one who filed it, he beat me to the punch, but he admitted backing into me in the report.

Whichever is faster for the shop I guess.

How jacked up is the door gap? Any curl-over?

Sweet! Damn I wish mine would work out as easy as that. You should be good to go then.

Here’s the result of the Ford dealership matching White Metallic Platinum Tri-Coat on a 2013 Explorer.

We already discussed a warranty repair and they were going to repaint it for free, but my wife decided to hurry the process along by getting rear-ended last week.

I wish you the best of luck.

Oof. Tough luck man. Black is typically an easier color to match with gloss paint, I am just concerned with the level of bass boat fleck in my paint matching.

I’m going to say if they save the doors it’ll be 1800. If they have to reskin the doors - 3800.

I guess I’m feeling the 8's

I was a complete asshole to this guy after he hit me, I came unglued, i was completely stationary when he back into me. The best way i can describe my action was "So there I was dropping F-bombs and screaming at a little indian man who shared more than a passing resemblence to Ghandi" Not one of my proudest moments. I assume he thought I would sue or something so he wanted to get the details in quick to the cops.

Paint is a formula, even down to the amount of metallic flake. Won’t be an issue, especially since your car is new enough there should little to no fading.

Metallic colors are hard to match and may never look perfect without complete repaint. If the paint guy knows what he is doing he may be able to feather it so it’s close but it will almost always be visible.

Your capitalization of Minivan actually puts me in mind of what it would be like if model names were actually that simple and concise. The Subaru AWD Wagon. The Dodge Minivan. The Ford Retro Coupe. The Chevy Bowtie-Wearing Retro Coupe. The Toyota Truck... oh, wait.

I would have refused delivery and demanded a loaner. That is deplorable.

It wasn’t visible in the bright sunlight on the day of delivery. It has also gotten worse as time goes on, suggesting a problem with the paint.

Yeah, I wonder if they used a different paint system on the repair. Almost looks like it.

Can’t say I would not/have not done the same. After have my car a little over a year and parking meticulously as far away as possible from people in parking lots I got my door chipped.

How? I was stopped a red light and a fuckin taxi cab lets out his passengers who fling the door into my car. I get out look at the door and it has a very small chip but I still flip out on two 16 year olds and the driver. Told the driver he was an idiot for letting the passengers off in the middle of the street and cursed the kids out. Eventually I got back in my car and left since there wasn’t anything else I could do at that point and I’m not going to get physical with 3 people in the middle of traffic.

A good shop can match the metal flake, it just comes down to experience. I estimate $2000-$2800. It’s just two doors, so it’s very likely it could even be less than $2000 if you find the right body shop.

I had my girlfriend’s car door re-done. It was keyed years ago. Talked to the body shop about it at length, and since I didn’t want her to notice it immediately, they sanded starting at the bottom of the stripe and going down (you have to literally put your face against the door to find the line). Sanded the whole door down to the metal, repainted, blended to adjacent panels and took care of flaking paint and minor rust spots all at the same time.

I went out of pocket and it cost me about $600 to have it done. He may be doing touchup on the SL soon as well, depending on the estimate from the other shop that may get a chance (more of a higher end/exotic body place).

Oh, please do get physical in the middle of the street.

Perfectly reasonable response given the bodywork that’s necessary on both vehicles.

Yeah, it happens. It’s never fun when something happens and it’s not your fault. Where I live, they probably would have gave false info or tried to find a way to blame you, so good on him for at least doing the right thing.

Well I also demanded to take a picture of his license, registration and insurance info... So that probably deterred any funny business.

Damn, you weren’t playing around! Honestly that’s the best way to do it, though. You had all your bases covered. May seem like a dick move to some, but when it’s your car there’s no reason to take any chances.

I offered him the same for me, it was a bit different because in Michigan the police wont respond to parking lot fender benders unless someone is injured or the car is not driveable.

Ahhh ok. Definitely makes since then. The police will respond to a parking lot accident in Mississippi whether there are injuries or not, but it’s done on a different report since it is considered private property.
